Prepositions tell us where things are. In Dutch, common ones are in, op, onder, naast.

Examples:
The book is on the table → Het boek ligt op de tafel
The cat is under the chair → De kat is onder de stoel
The pen is next to the notebook → De pen ligt naast het notitieboek
There is a picture on the wall → Er hangt een foto aan de muur
